New Jury Trials Resuming in Brampton, Newmarket, Ottawa, and Toronto

Jury selection was paused in Brampton, Newmarket, Ottawa, and Toronto due to those areas being in a modified Stage Two related to COVID-19 pandemic. Since these areas are being removed from the modified Stage Two, new jury trials will resume.

A Notice to the Profession indicates that, as of November 9, 2020, new jury selection and new jury trials will commence in Ottawa. As of November 16, 2020, new jury selection and new jury trials will recommence in Brampton, Newmarket, and Toronto.

In the Notice, Chief Justice Morawetz acknowledges the efforts of the Ministry of the Attorney General and Recovery Secretariat for the many protocols that the Ministry has put into place in order to resume court operations and jury matters.

*Update: a new Notice has been issued indicating that new jury selection and jury trials in Brampton and Toronto have been suspended until at least November 30, 2020.
