Fall Jury Trials in Central-East Cancelled

In a Notice to the Profession for the Central-East Region that was released yesterday, it was announced that the civil (non-family) trial sittings scheduled to commence on November 16, 2020 are cancelled. This means that there will be no civil jury trials in the Central-East Region this fall.

The Notice indicates that it is uncertain whether any civil jury cases will proceed to trial before May 2021.

For civil non-jury trials that could not proceed in November 2019 or May 2020, cases will be called for trial commencing the week of October 5, 2020. There will be a running civil trial list, and there will be an option of conducting trials by Zoom.

When court space becomes available because of the collapse of criminal matters, counsel/parties with cases on the list will be notified that their case is called in for trial. Counsel/parties must be ready to proceed to trial on 48 hours notice. If counsel/parties are not ready to proceed when notified, the case will fall to the bottom of the list.

Civil pre-trial conferences will proceed as scheduled and will be held by Zoom.

The Central-East Region is comprised of Barrie, Bracebridge, Cobourg, Durham, Lindsay, Newmarket, and Peterborough.
